How to Stop Sheets From Pilling and Keep Them Soft
What causes pilling?
Pilling — those little fabric balls — happens when fibres rub, break and tangle. Friction from washing, body movement, and lower-quality short fibres all contribute. Good-quality, longer-staple cotton resists it far better from the start.
Buy quality cotton first
The best defence is the sheet itself. Tightly woven, long-staple cotton pills much less than cheap, loosely woven fabric. It’s worth investing a little more in a sheet that stays smooth.
Wash gently
- Use a gentle or normal cycle, not the harshest setting.
- Don’t overload the machine — crowding increases friction and pilling.
- Turn sheets and pillowcases inside out to protect the surface.
- Wash with similar fabrics, not rough items like towels or zips.
Go easy on detergent and heat
Too much detergent leaves residue that stiffens fabric. Use the right amount, avoid very hot water, and skip harsh bleach. Lower heat is gentler on fibres and keeps sheets softer longer.
Dry carefully
Line-dry in shade where you can, or use a low-heat dryer setting. Over-drying on high heat weakens and roughens fibres, which leads to pilling.
Restore softness naturally
A little white vinegar in the rinse occasionally removes detergent buildup and revives softness — without the fibre-coating downsides of fabric softener.
Remove existing pills gently
If pilling has started, a fabric shaver or a gentle de-pilling tool can refresh the surface. Run it lightly so you don’t damage the weave.
